Types of Surgical Approaches
Surgeons use three main methods to repair a hernia:
- Open Hernia Surgery: The surgeon makes a single larger incision near the hernia, repositions the tissue, and stitches the muscle wall closed, typically reinforcing it with a synthetic mesh. [1, 2]
- Laparoscopic Surgery: A minimally invasive approach where the surgeon makes several tiny incisions, inserts a small camera (laparoscope), and uses specialized tools to place a reinforcing mesh. [1, 2]
- Robotic-Assisted Surgery: Similar to laparoscopic surgery but performed via a computer console controlling robotic arms, allowing for greater surgical precision and control. [1, 2]
